Research subjects

The Medical Image and Signal Processing (MEDISP) laboratory is part of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the Technological Educational Institution (TEI) of Athens Greece. MEDISP’s main objective is to research and develop new methods and applications for Medical Image Processing, Image Analysis and Pattern Recognition, Radiation Detectors (Image Formation), Medical Statistics and Medical Informatics to assist in the solution of clinical problems.

MEDISP’s main areas of research are:

  1. Research in Medical Signal & Image Processing & Analysis. We have developed software for tackling a number of clinical problems, in collaboration with various clinics of university hospitals, public sector hospitals, and private clinics.  We have dealt with diagnostic problems under different diagnostic modalities (US, MRI, DSA, CT, SPECT) using images and or signals (EEG). We have developed our own software (in C++, for applications, or in MATLAB, for prototyping) to apply, develop, and advance pattern recognition algorithms (e.g. SVM, MLP, PNN) and we have published a number of papers on the subject (see relevant scientific journal publications and conference proceeding publications).
  2. Research in x-ray detectors (scintillators) of medical imaging systems.
    We study x-ray luminescence efficiency, both experimentally and theoretically, in a wide range of x-ray energies (from 10kVp to 200kVp) and coating thicknesses (20mg/cm2 to 250 mg/cm2); we have been preparing test phosphor screens by sedimentation in our laboratory using small samples of phosphor materials. We also measure and calculate signal and noise transfer characteristics (MTF, NPS, DQE) of phosphor detector materials. We use the Hamaker, Ludwig, Swank, Nishikawa and Yaffe theoretical models to computer simulate phosphor behavior under x-ray excitation. We have published a number of papers on the subject (see relevant scientific journal publications and conference proceeding publications).
  3. Research in Medical Informatics & Medical Statistics.
    We have cooperated in research studies in radiology, applying statistical analysis methods, for establishing morphological changes due to disease, age, and for investigating normal dimensions and normal variants in adults and in children (see relevant scientific journal publications and conference proceeding publications).
  4. Cytological and histological microscopy image processing.
    Our research interests are also extended in the area of processing and analysis of cytological imaging (see relevant scientific journal publications and conference proceeding publications).
  5. Bioinformatics.
    We have also recently been involved in research in bioinformatics in the areas of proteomics and genomics (see relevant scientific journal publications and conference proceeding publications –see also participation in Eurokup COSΤ).
  6. Telemedicine / Remote monitoring.
    We have also develop telemedicine and remote monitoring software for research purposes (see relevant scientific journal publications and conference proceeding publications).
